Getting the Firmware Update

For a while, firmware updates for the DTC-100 was available as download from the DirecTV satellite(s).  It appears that this is no longer the case.  Below is a tip from mikesch who provided the info at our Forum.

"If you have version 3.72 there is no way to get an automatic software upgrade, you must call Thompson product support and get scheduled for a "paddle upgrade". This service is free and you don't have to be a DTV subscriber to get it. The problem is that it was a huge pain to get set up. It took about a month's time and we went through 3 local repair shops before the Thompson support person (Lisa) found a repair shop that would actually follow through and do the job. You'll see my last post was on Jan 25th, well I just finally was able to bring my unit in yesterday and got it back today! Hello firmware version 5.10 !!!

I'm happy to say that the upgrade fixed my problems of audio dying and spontaneous reboots when certain stations were turned in as was expected.

Call 1-877-722-4388 and ask for Lisa or the "paddle upgrade" specialist.

I'd be very interested in finding out how things work out for you, let me know. I suspect they have ironed out their support problems enough that it shouldn't take you months to get your firmware upgraded like it did for me."

As an FYI only, this was the procedure for getting the firmware via DirecTV when it was still being done this way.

To get the latest update, do the following:

  • Connect your receiver to a DSS dish pointed to 101 degrees
  • Tune the set to any DirecTV channel and wait for the automatic 4.037 upgrade download regularly transmitted at 5am EST and at 4:30 pm EST.

Once the download is complete, that's it!

WARNING:  Interrupting the download could render your DTC unusable!   There have been a few confirmed first hand accounts of such episodes.  In those instances, interruptions were caused by cabling or dish realignment. Innocent enough as it seem but apparently fatal to the DTC operation.

So, if the DTC is scheduled for an upgrade (as indicated in the DTC service menu), it is highly recommended that it, its cabling, and the antenna not be disturbed until after the download has been completed.
