Starting Crosses without Starting Clamp

My starting clamp failed on me after a year of use. :(

So, what is one to do in starting the crosses?  I wasn't going to use the starting knot again since it makes me cringe whenever I see it pulled and crush the grommet on my old Volkl racquets.  Ouch.

Since I have two spare Laserfibre flying clamps, I figured I'd use one of them as part of a workaround to start the crosses.  I can probably use the fixed clamps for this but I normally just use the flying clamps since 1)  I have them and 2) I use the fixed clamps as an additional measure to keep the strings in place.

I weave the first two crosses, pull on both of them at a higher tension then use the flying clamp to secure them in place next to frame where the strings exit.  This may not be the most effective or the best method, but it works for me.  By the way, I use the Parnell knot to secure the open end of the string just like any tie-off.

The image below provides a rough graphic of how I start the crosses.

Please ignore the weave shown since this is simply an illustration.  I'll post an actual picture the next time I restring one of my Prince Diablo Mids.
